How to Qualify for WIC Program?

Question:  How to Qualify for WIC Program?

Answer:  In order to qualify for WIC Program, you must be

  • Pregnant OR
  • Postpartum OR
  • Breastfeeding women OR
  • Infants OR
  • Children up to age 5

and meet certain income eligibility and State residency.  You must apply to the WIC office that is in your own State.  Additionally, the applicant must be individually determined to be at “nutrition risk” by a health professional or a trained health official.

Where is WIC Program available?

Question: Where is WIC Program available?

Answer: WIC Program is available in all 50 States, 34 Indian Tribal Organizations and all US territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Island).  While WIC Program is funded through grants from the Federal Government, the WIC Program is administered by the State agencies.

What is WIC Program?

Answer: WIC Program was established in 1974 to provide and safeguard the health of low-income women, infants and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk.  WIC Program provides nutrition education (including breastfeeding promotion and support), referrals to health and other social services and nutritious foods to supplement diets.

As of 2014, there are over 8 million people (infants, children, and women) receiving WIC support.

WIC Program helps to prevent health problems and improve the health status of participants through good nutrition. The WIC Program supplements the diets of qualified participants with nutritious food items by issuing a food “prescription” recommended by a personal nutritionist.
